The woman behind the brand, Laurence Mahéo, is no different from the women she creates clothes for. She is bold, courageous, genuine, free-spirited. The only difference is that she no longer needs to strive to make her mark on the world, because she already has.

Laurence started La Prestic Ouiston in 2008, though at that time the brand only sold one-off, handmade luxury pieces. It wasn't until two years later that she expanded her business into high-end, ready-to-wear collections. But even as she expanded, the essence of her clothes remained the same -- funky, wild prints, an explosion of color and pattern, luxurious fabrics with a masculine cut, and subtle nod to vintage.

Laurence Mahéo has made it her purpose to disprove the saying "less is more," both in her designs and in the way she lives her life.

It's of little surprise that Laurence's designs tend to emphasize high-end fabrics given her upbringing. Raised in France, she was exposed to world of textiles at a young age through her grandparents' fabric store. Though she never received formal schooling in the world of fashion, she spent some time working as a tailor at Arthur and Fox, a well-known independent suit-maker. During this time, Laurence started experimenting with creating her own designs on the side. She began selling them to La Bon Marché in small batches of one-off pieces. Before she knew what was happening, she had created her own brand.

 

 

With La Prestic Ouiston established as a legitimate brand, Laurence had the freedom to truly create something different. And she has, over and over and over again.

For each collection, Laurence starts by developing original, exclusive prints for her fabric. These prints are the foundation of each collection and the start of her creative process. Most prints are the result of collaborations with artists like Parisian Laurence Kiberlain and Paulette Zoute. And they define the essence of her collections -- the mad desire to be different, to stand out in the crowd.

Laurence Mahéo also lives a wild, more-is-better kind of life. She can't be defined as purely a designer, or as an owner of a fashion brand. Laurence is also an oyster farmer and a writer. Her oyster farm, situated on her family's land in the NW region of France, is quite successful. In 2019 she wrote nousdeux1984@gmail.com, a collection of short stories about Brittany, where she often vacations in the summer. And I'm sure that before long, we will be checking in to hear about Laurence's next venture.

Back to the beginning

Over the past fifteen years, La Prestic Ouiston has grown tremendously. What started as one-off, handmade pieces has turned into large, widely sought-after collections. Until four years ago, La Prestic Ouiston was only available at a select few exclusive stores. After a new collection was released, they would do a globe-trotting tour of pop-up stores in Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Seoul, etc.

In 2019 La Prestic Ouiston opened it's first e-commerce site as well as a brick and mortar boutique, which can be found in the Saint Germain district of Paris. This brought a striking new turn for the company, along with a lot of excitement. Perhaps the new store will allow Laurence Mahéo to connect with her roots again and return to creating one-off, handmade pieces. Only time will tell, but until the fateful day, we will be eagerly checking every chance we get.
